Movies
I was not particularly impressed with the movie offering on display this year. I really had to search around to find good (mainstream) releases. The movies on this list are the ones that I would watch again.
Blade Runner: 2049
- October 4th
- Letterboxd score: 4.2/5
For me, this was the movie of the year. I missed the IMAX version but even in regular format the images are stunning. Every scene is a photographic wonder.
Baby Driver
- June 21st
- Letterboxd score: 4.0/5
It's rare to see a great, singular movie with a clear beginning and end these days. Edgard Wright delivers another masterpiece in cinematography with Baby Driver.
Le Fidéle
- October 4th
- Letterboxd score: 2.9/5
Michael Roskam's new movie received mixed reviews, but to me, this is once again proof that Belgian cinema can be much more than a 2h version of whatever soap is popular on TV with the same actors all over again. Watch this one.
Logan
- March 1st
- Letterboxd score: 4.0/5
Raise your hand if you are tired of superhero movies. Logan proves that there's still a way to be inventive in the genre. It helps that Wolverine is my favorite X-men, but other than that, this movie has great pacing and it sort of restored my faith in the superhero genre.
Dunkirk
- July 13th
- Letterboxd score: 4.1/5
Christopher Nolan is 47 years old and has directed the following films: Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins. Let's forget Man of Steel for a moment and then decide that everything this man touches becomes gold.
The Beauty and the Beast
- February 23rd
- Letterboxd score: 3.3/5
With the risk of losing my masculinity, I have to commend Disney for not butchering the original story with this adaptation of 1991's animated film. The biggest start is the soundtrack, but I also enjoyed Emma Watson's role as the beauty.
