Video Games
The biggest thing in games this year was arguably the introduction of Nintendo's Switch. Before the Switch, there was a clear distinction between mobile gaming, and gaming at home. Now, that's gone. The Switch played a major role in my 2017 gaming adventures, but some of the best gaming still happened on that good ol' PS4.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Released March 3rd
- Nintendo Switch
-
open world
-
story-driven
This is undoubtedly the game of the year. BotW is the only game this year that just made me sit down with it whenever I had a bit of free time. Zelda: Breath of the Wild challenges what a Zelda game can be, while still being a Zelda game at heart. I've yet to play the DLCs, but if you have the chance to play the base game, please give it a chance.
Overcooked
- Released August 2nd
- Nintendo Switch
-
action
-
multiplayer
There are so few games to play on the couch with friends. Honestly, try searching both the PlayStation and the Switch store for titles that you can play with 4 persons. There's almost nothing to be found. Luckily, there is Overcooked. This is THE multiplayer game to play with your friends.
Gran Turismo: Sport
- Released November 17th
- PS4
-
racing
-
online
This year I've really started to appreciate the racing game. Next to Dirt Rally (2016) I've played quite a bit of GT: Sport and boy, for me, it is awesome. Stunning visuals, an interesting (albeit a bit flawed) online competitive mode, and lots of tutorials for how to be a better driver.
FIFA '18
- Released September 29th
- PS4
-
action
-
multiplayer
-
sports
Historically I've always been a PES guy, but this year I must say FIFA stole the pole position for the best soccer game. It's one of the few games you can just sit down with a friend and start playing immediately. There's single-player mode The Journey, there's the official licensing, and the gameplay is just awesome.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
- Released August 22nd
- PS4
-
action
-
shooter
-
story-driven
I picked this one up as a €19.99 sale. It provides roughly 8 hours worth of gameplay, and you'll see the credits roll quickly. But if you liked Uncharted 4, this is more of the same, but that's not a bad thing!
Super Mario: Odyssey
- Released October 27th
- Nintendo Switch
-
platformer
-
action
I'm a bit hesitant to include this one. Did I like it or not? Why did the credits roll so early? Was it really fun? I'm not sure. Super Mario 64 was the video game that made me a gamer - so was this a blast of nostalgia?
There's nothing wrong with this game. It's well made and provides a lot of variety. I'm just not sure if I care anymore, especially if I consider it next to Breath of the Wild.
